A Lament

What is this violence among us?
Why do weapons
designed solely to harm
make us feel safe?

We don’t know why
we have abundant capacity
for violence, war, hatred, torture.
We don’t know why
we build walls while yearning for community.
We don’t know why
we lack the will and desire
to educate, heal, and be home
to one another.
What is this violence among us?

Human reason is not always reasonable,
which is why we need You, O God.
When we need security,
You say, “I know.”
When we need courage,
You say, “I will.”
And when we need love,
You say, “I do.”
It is You, O God,
we need among us.
And you say,
“I am.”
